I’ve trawled the web for the best financial independence resources out there. The resources on this page are some of my favourites and those I have found most useful. This is an ever evolving list, make sure to check back frequently for new suggestions.

I will only ever recommend a service or product if I have used it and think it may help you on your FIRE journey. Affiliate link commissions help to pay for the admin costs in running the MMG.

Blogs

USA Focus

  • Mr Money Moustache – the godfather of the FIRE movement, read everything on this blog.
  • Financial Samurai – a detailed, numbers driven take on FIRE. Sam has very strong opinions on issues such as the 4% rule, whether to pay off your mortgage early and asset allocation. He also publishes a great podcast and recently published his second book “Buy this not that”.
  • Our Next Life – an amazing couple who really are living the outdoor dream.
  • The Frugalwoods – an inspiring story of extreme frugality, taking control of life and moving to the woods! What is so inspiring about this journey is that it’s so relatable and shows how it can be done by everyone.
  • Bella Wanana – a great blog with a tonne of resources to help you lead a fun, balanced and fulfilling life.

    Singapore Focus

    • Fire Path Lion – very good for a Singapore focus, including thoughts on portfolio set-up for the Singapore based investor.
    • Turtle Investor – broad ranging personal finance blog, including money hacks and travel.

      Books

      USA Focus

      • The Simple Path to Wealth, J.L. Collins – This book has the power to change your life. It documents the advice of a successful investor ‘dad’ to his daughter explaining the key tenets of the financial independence movement and the practical steps to follow to reach your own financial dreams. Its easy to read and digest (though at times, US focused).
      • Meet the Frugalwoods, Mrs Frugalwoods – This book was such an inspiring and interesting read. Very relatable to just about anyone, I just loved it and finished it within a day.
      • Your Money or Your Life, Vicki Robin – This is now a total classic and is a must read for all FIRE enthusiasts. It introduces cool concepts linking money and your time spent on this planet. Your energy (and therefore your life) is your money.
      • The Millionaire Next Door, Thomas Stanley and William Danko – This is a great book which I finished in one session via an audio version. It dives into traits of millionaires and has some surprising (to most) outcomes. It can be nicely summed up in this paragraph: “Twenty years ago we began studying how people became wealthy. Initially, we did it just as you might imagine, by surveying people in so-called upscale neighbourhoods across the country. In time, we discovered something odd. Many people who live in expensive homes and drive luxury cars do not actually have much wealth. Then we discovered something even odder: Many people who have a great deal of wealth do not even live in upscale neighbourhoods.

      General

      • The Psychology of Money: This is a really interesting book which helps to consolidate all of your FIRE know-how, or introduce core FIRE concepts to a new reader. Told through the lense of stories and lessons, it’s super engaging and hard to put this one down. I’ve now bought it for 4 people to help them on their financial journeys!
      • Die with Zero: Initially this feels like a bit of an anti-FIRE book, but really a lot of the values align with the movement. The basic premise of the book is to encourage you to spend more of your money in your lifetime and to not waste time working for money you wont spend. I agreed with some of what was said but not necessarily everything. Very thought provoking nonetheless.
        Podcasts & YouTube
        • ChooseFI – I listen to this weekly and its awesome! I’ve learned so much from Brad and Jonathan through this Podcast series. It’s a treasure trove of inspiring stories and easy to digest information.
        • Mad Fientist – Another great podcast where you can learn about investing, tax avoidance, entrepreneurship, travel hacking, real estate, and all things related to financial independence and early retirement! He was the first to bring the FIRE movement to a Podcast.
        • Two Cents – A brilliant and well produced YouTube channel on all things personal finance. I came across these guys a few months ago and have watched most of their fun, relatable and quirky content.
        • Two Sides of FI: I really enjoy this pod. The show’s unique angle is one host has already reached FI and the other is a couple more years away. They both offer interesting perspectives on the final few years of the FI journey and what life after FI looks like.
        • Bigger Pockets Money: This is a new addition to my podcast playlist. They offer practical tips on how to successfully reach financial freedom. Additionally their show offers educational explainers on things such as REITs and coping with money trauma.
        • The Stacking Benjamins Show: Although super cheesy and FULL of advert segments, they interview interesting people and have long episodes which I like. I tend to listen at 1.25x speed!

        • Trust Bank – I use Trust Bank in Singapore for their “high” interest savings account (currently 2%) and for cashback on FairPrice groceries. For an extra $10 FairPrice voucher, use my referral code: B56SZK4P
